Roots and culture - a journey through the centuries

Tučepi's history dates back to Illyrian and Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological traces and the foundations on which St. George's Church was built as early as the 13th century. The first written records date to 1434, but the settlement functioned here long before that - the name of the village derives from the Illyrian term for "village by the spring."

In the Middle Ages Tučepi served as a strategic fortress, as evidenced by the numerous towers and fortalicas built in the 18th century as protection against Turkish invasions. The development of tourism began in the 1950s and 1960s, which transformed the region's economy and led to the establishment of modern accommodations and visitor-friendly infrastructure.
